Boo-hoo at the ZOU. Congratulations to Oklahoma State on its excellent ( :( ) win tonight. Oklahoma, Missouri, LSU -- a tough day to have been on top. Alabama might be lucky to have stayed home.
RE: question for the more mature members?
If you were an adult in the 50's and are still alive, I would like to shake your hand and say whats your secret? :)
If you were 25 in 1955 (born in 1930) you'll be 78 this year. There are millions still around. There's no great secret, but there are some great stories behind many of them. Shake their hands and ask about some of those! :)
RE: Are You A Licker Or A Chucker?
I AM NOT eating any molding milk product.. Worst than cottage cheese.. Would rather eat the clean carton.
"Here, have some of this. We got it from some kind of culture in the back of the refrigerator." Yeah, I'm not too much into that, either.
As for cottage cheese, I don't eat anything that you buy by the size of the curd. Little Miss Muffet got what she had coming. :w
RE: Volunteers
There's not much available in the form of deductions for volunteering. From the U.S. Treasury website:
Q: There is much talk about encouraging people to volunteer their time to help organizations that provide community services. Shouldn't people who do volunteer work be provided with a tax deduction to compensate them for their donation?
A: Under current law, volunteers are prohibited from taking a charitable contribution deduction for the value of the services they provided to charities. However, the tax code does support volunteer work for charitable organizations by allowing volunteers to take a charitable contribution deduction for expenses they incur in connection with their volunteer services, but the expenses must be ones the charity would otherwise have to incur, not personal expenses of the volunteer. For example, volunteers may deduct the cost of materials they donate for use in repairs to a church, supplies they use in leading activities at a day care center, or uniforms they wear when serving as nurses' aides. However, volunteers may not deduct personal expenses such as meals eaten during a break in a local service project, transportation to and from a school where they donate their time, or child care expenses.
RE: East Coast Campgrounds with Holiday events
James Island County Park in Charleston has the Holiday Festival of Lights, consistently rated as one of the top ten displays in the country. It's a three-mile, three-million light drive through the park. It runs from November 14 through January 4 this year. Besides the lights, there's a Santa and Mrs. Claus, trains through a lighted, wooded area not accessible by car, climbing wall, full-sized carousel, places to roast marshmallows and make s'mores, live music some evenings, and a lot more.
We're currently at JICP helping to set up the lights, and will be hosting during the festival. If you get here, look us up in Site 28.
It's almost impossible to get into the campground (right in the park, right across the street from the center of the festival) on weekends during the festival unless you luck into a cancellation, but Monday-Thursday there are often spots available.
Callaway Gardens near Warm Springs, GA, also has a great light display, not too far from FDR State Park and its CG's. There's a good walk-through at Bellingrath Gardens, west of Mobile, but no adjacent CG. Another fun event is Christmas on the River, a one-night event in Demopolis, AL. Don't know the date this year.
RE: It finally got here
The link I posted is not for a National Geographic version, it's from the U.S. Department of Transportation. It sounds as if there might be two good guides out there.
RE: Correct English
This is funny -- to me -- because I can laugh at the pomposity of the professor, at the "grammar police" mentality, or at either the lack of knowledge or the snappy comeback by the student. It might not be funny to you, and that's fine. (In fact, I described it as a story, not as a joke.)
It's been said that comedy is when someone slips on a banana peel and falls, and that tragedy is when I slip on a banana peel and fall.
If you don't find it funny, don't laugh.
RE: Correct English
I'm reminded (as I so often am) of an old story.
It's about the college freshman who is crossing the campus and encounters an elderly professor. "Can you tell me where the library is at?" asks the freshman.
Glaring, the professor says, "Young man, at Harvard one does not end a sentence with a preposition!"
The student replies, "Sorry. Can you tell me where the library is at, jerk?"
RE: Monument Valley to St. Louis, best route?
The last time we traveled I-70 in Kansas, about four years ago, much of it had been rebuilt or repaved. It was like driving on silk. Much of I-70 in Missouri has also been repaved, but there's still still some work to do.
RE: Avoid Front Royal, VA!
This might help. At most Wal-Marts where parking is allowed, if the lot is striped in yellow, there will be an area striped in white (or vice-versa). This area is designated for RVs to overnight as long as space is available.
This was pointed out to us by a WM manager in Sevierville, TN about 8 years ago, and we've found it to be almost invariably true. As others have mentioned, though, if WM doesn't own the lot, the mall owner might overrule the WM policy. Local ordinances might also prohibit overnighting (Bloomington, MN, Orlando and many others in FL, as examples), but these are generally posted.
As for Front Royal, I see no reason to avoid it and its entry to the Skyline Drive, but thanks for the heads-up on parking.
RE: Charleston in October?
Cindy and I are at JICP now, in site 28, and will be until just after the first of the year. We're working on displays and hosting for the Holiday Festival of Lights.
Stop by and say hello if you get here!
RE: What a waste of "MONEY"
Here are the four new designs for the back of the Lincoln Bicentennial Penny, as issued by the U.S. Mint and reproduced on Fox News:

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?
~Bonnie
there is a tree similar to this in NW Ar. I'll try to remember to get a picture next time I'm by it.
Preacher, if you stop at the campground just across the road from the Shoe Tree near Eureka Springs, they'll sell you the story about it. It was $1 when we stopped years ago. Wish I could still find it.
RE: What a waste of "MONEY"
They were only good when we had penny candy and the old style fuses that screwed in. You used to use a penny in the socket till you got the right size fuse.
Or until right after the fire! :E
RE: So the wife gets home from Walla Walla..........
Mandrake, you need to go to the store, get a nice big steak,..........and then put it on your eye to help reduce the bruising and swelling. :E
RE: Beware! Moose are on the move in NH (and VT)
I would NOT want to meet a moose on a motorcycle, EVER.

How do they get the helmet on over those big antlers? :h
RE: FEMA
There are many who are truly in need, and in this time of recovery from a disaster must be helped.
Then, there are those who have an entitlement mentality and believe that the world owes them a living. They are wrong, but they have enablers who will encourage that attitude and continue to do whatever it takes to buy their votes for generations.
